Laser Therapy in Dental Hygiene

Course Description:

The introduction of laser therapy in dental hygiene has revolutionized the treatment and prevention available in the general dental practice. Lasers offer treatment options to patients that give more precise outcomes, incorporate easily into treatment plans, and can be implemented for a wide variety of uses and cases. This course is designed to give the hygienist an introduction to the uses of laser therapy in dental hygiene. In this course, the hygienist will gain an overview of the types of lasers used in oral health, and the most common laser used in dental hygiene practice. This course will also provide a general description of how each type of laser works and provide attendees a basic understanding of the different uses of lasers available in general practice and collaborative care, such as oncology care. At the end of the course, the hygienist will have knowledge to decide if they wish to incorporate laser therapy into their practice, and have the basic information of how to achieve certification.

Course Objectives:

  1. Review the mechanism of action of lasers used in oral medicine
  2. Identify laser therapy applications available to registered dental hygienists
  3. Describe how laser therapy can be used in a collaborative care setting
