OVERVIEW - Your saliva has a story to tell about your health. The oral microbiome can alter the balance between health and disease, locally and systemically. Within the oral cavity, bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, and viruses may all be found, each having a particular role, but strongly interacting with each other and with the host, in sickness or in health. Early diagnosis of disease, quantification of disease and prognosis of the treatment are vital steps in controlling and preventing the diseases that can and will change a person’s quality of life. Salivary diagnostics gives clinicians a chance to individualize treatment and provide biomarkers to watch for potential future health risks.

OBJECTIVES 

1. Gain an understanding of the history of salivary diagnostics.
2. Provide an elemental understanding of the laboratory process when analyzing saliva samples.
3. Discuss the oral systemic links between microbial content of the saliva and associated health conditions.
4. Finally, describe the how, when, and where to test your patients and what to do with the results in treatment planning.
